How to Choose an AI Agent Template Pack (Without Buying a Toy)

October 21, 2026

Most "AI agent" downloads on the internet are demos in a trench coat: a screenshot, a prompt pasted into a PDF, and code that has never actually run. They look like leverage and behave like homework. If you are buying a template pack to save time, the pack has to survive contact with your machine — not just a sales page.

This is the checklist we use ourselves. It takes about five minutes per listing, and it will filter out almost every toy.

The five-minute test

  • It runs out of the box. A real pack ships runnable code — scripts, workflows, or notebooks — with the dependencies named and pinned. "Concepts included" is not a deliverable.
  • The README maps the files. You should be able to read the documentation and predict what every file does before you open it. If the README is two paragraphs of adjectives, walk away.
  • There is a free sample. A seller who has a real product can show you a real piece of it. Samples are the cheapest honesty test in digital goods.
  • The cover shows what is inside. Screenshots of the actual files, workflows, or rendered output — not a bare title card or stock art of a robot shaking a hand.
  • The "What's included" list is specific. File counts, formats, and versions. Vague bundles hide thin contents.

Red flags that end the evaluation

  • Capability claims the files cannot support — "120 intents" in a pack that contains a dozen.
  • A stub ZIP: a placeholder file standing in for the "real" download you are supposedly paying for.
  • No version or framework named. "Works with AI" is not a stack.
  • Auto-generated descriptions and empty search metadata — if the seller did not write the listing, they probably did not test the product either.

How we hold our own shelf to this

Every product on MarketplacePlanet — ours or a seller's — has to meet a published listing standard: a real, working deliverable file; a preview cover that shows the actual contents; a free sample linked in the description; a "What's included" checklist; and hand-written search metadata based on what is really in the file. Listings that failed that bar were rebuilt or removed — including some of our own.

Packs that pass the test

Whichever shelf you buy from, run the five-minute test first. Your future self — the one who would have debugged a stranger's stub at midnight — says thanks.
